Syracuse's Rose Garden

Last Sunday, my husband and I visited the historic Elizabeth Park and their famed rose garden in Hartford, Connecticut.

After the trip, it reminded me that I should blog about Syracuse's own rose garden located in Thorden Park.

I first discovered the rose garden way back in 2004 during an afternoon jog and have since made it a point to visit to cool-off after a jog, to relax after a stressful day and to simply bring family and friends visiting Syracuse. I also recommend to bring a picnic basket or to enjoy a late afternoon BBQ as there are areas where you can grill food in Thorden Park. While in Thorden Park, might as well catch Shakespeare in the park during the summer time.

The rose garden is usually in full bloom in June. Although some roses remain in bloom until late July/early August (if I remember right). But why wait to visit - this is after all a nice, relaxing and student-budget friendly way to spend the summer in Syracuse...

New On-Campus Regulations for J-1 Students

Below is an e-mail from Ms. Carolyn Salter, International Education Coordinator at SUNY-ESF. Am sure most of us J-1 students will need to familiarize ourselves with the new requirements especially if you're receiving an assistantship from ESF. Please read on... I also included Ms. Slater's address in Bray Hall if you need to talk to her personally.

Ms. Slater's e-mail:

I am writing to inform you of an update to the US government SEVIS system regarding the requirement of reporting of on-campus employment (including assistantships). Please note that this does not impact the procedure for academic training employment authorization outlined on the Office of International Education website: http://www.esf.edu/international/AcademicTraining.htm.

The J-1 Exchange Visitor Program regulations require that the Office of International Education, as the SUNY-ESF J-1 program sponsor, grant authorization to J-1 students for a specific location of on-campus employment, to be renewed on a yearly basis [22 C.F.R. § 62.23(g)(2)(iv)]. This employment authorization must be obtained for all on-campus employment including assistantships. On-campus employment authorization must be renewed annually and obtained every time you change on-campus jobs. I have attached a handout that explains the regulation. The second page of the handout is the authorization form. If you currently have an on-campus position including an assistantship, please have your employer complete Part 1 of the form. Once this has been done, please bring the completed form to me so that I can update your SEVIS record and authorize the employment. If you are currently not employed on-campus but obtain on-campus employment in the future, please be sure to submit this form to me so that I can update your SEVIS record. (The form is also available on the Office of international Education website at: http://www.esf.edu/international/forms.htm. Failure to do submit the authorization form will result in a hold being placed on your pay.

Please feel free to email me any questions that you may have.

All the best,

Carolyn

Updates on Security Procedure for ESF/SU Convocation on May 10, 2009

I'm sure that many of you have heard that this year's guest speaker for the 2009 May Convocation to be held on May 10, 2009 is Vice President Joe Bidden. Hence, there will be tighter security measures this year. For those of you graduating or attending the ceremonies as guests, here are the updated information security procedures e-mailed to the student body recently...

Updated information on security procedures, degree candidate entry andparking for May 10 SU/SUNY-ESF Commencement
Thursday, April 30, 2009- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

On Sunday, May 10, Syracuse University and the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) will hold joint Commencement exercises in the Carrier Dome. The student procession begins at 9:30 a.m. U.S. Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., an alumnus of the SU College of Law's Class of 1968, is Commencement speaker; his address is open to the public. Due to an anticipated larger-than-normal crowd and increased security measures, the Dome will open at 7:15 a.m. Those participating in and attending Commencement should plan for extra time to arrive on campus and complete the security process. Members of the public wishing to attend must enter the Dome through Gates G, H, J, K, L, M, N and P. Seating will be restricted to designated areas in the upper levels. Metal detectors will be used at every Dome entrance, and everyoneentering will be screened. Guests, degree candidates and members of the public should not bring large bags (i.e., backpacks, duffel bags, largeshopping bags) into the Dome. All purses, binocular cases and cameracases will be opened and inspected. Trash cans will not be available outside the Dome. All degree candidates must enter at Gate D and show a valid SU or SUNY-ESF I.D. in order to enter the Dome. Students will have their SUand SUNY-ESF identification scanned at the top of the stairs to Gate D, prior to metal detection. If the degree candidate's I.D. is successfully scanned, he/she will be directed down the stairs to the metal detectors. Students who do not have a valid I.D. will require extra time to validate their identity with staff from the SU and SUNY-ESF Registrar's Offices. At theRegistrar's table, students will be asked to provide an alternative form of picture identification and show their cap and gown, and will be asked a series of questions to validate their status. Once the student receives validation, he/she will move down the stairs to the metal detectors at Gate D. Space permitting, free parking is available in the Harrison, Lehman, Manley and Skytop lots, and the University Avenue and Booth garages. Shuttles will run regularly to and from the University Avenue Garage andthe Manley and Skytop lots beginning at 7 a.m. Disabled parking for thepublic, with direct bus service to Gate A of the Dome, is available inthe Manley North lot (entrance off of Comstock Avenue). For maps of campus parking and the Carrier Dome, and additionalinformation on the 2009 Commencement exercises,visithttp://commencement.syr.edu.

Flu Advisory from Dr. Murphy

I'm sure that everyone has heard and read the news that the swine flu has made its way to the United States from Mexico. Fortunately for us here in ESF, no one has fallen sick yet due to the swine flu. Of course, even with that we should still take precautions, after all summer break is coming up...

Here's an e-mail advisory from Dr. Murphy, President of SUNY-ESF regarding precautions we can take. Please read on ...

From: Cornelius B. Murphy, Jr.
President, ESF

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

The recent outbreak of H1N1 Influenza, informally known as swine flu, is of concern to the ESF community and we are closely monitoring the situation. As always, the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff is our primary concern.

The latest information we have indicates no one from the ESF/SU community or the city of Syracuse has been found to be ill with H1N1, although one case has been confirmed elsewhere in Cortland County.

In accordance with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control, we urge all members of the college community to avoid unnecessary travel to Mexico until more information is is available. Anyone who is planning international travel should check with the U.S. Department of State for the most up-to-date travel advisories at http://www.state.gov/travel/cis pa tw/cis/cis 1765.html

It is imperative that each one of us monitors our own health and takes appropriate action to protect ourselves and those around us. Keep in mind that influenza is mainly spread from person to person when the virus is carried in droplets from coughing or sneezing of infected people. You can also be exposed by touching contaminated surfaces, such as doorknobs, and then touching your mouth or nose. Typical symptoms of H1N1 are similar to the regular flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some infected people have also reported diarrhea and vomiting. The regular seasonal flu vaccine does not cover the H1N1 virus, but there are ways to reduce your risk of getting this flu:
· Wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds. Do this after you cough or sneeze or touch surfaces in public places. If soap is not available, carry an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
· Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue whenever you cough or sneeze and immediately dispose of the tissue after use.
· Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth as the flu virus can enter your body that way.
· Seek medical evaluation should you have a fever. Any student with a significant fever is encouraged to contact Health Services at (315) 443-9001 for an evaluation. Faculty and staff are encouraged to contact their personal health care providers as needed.
· If you think you may have the flu, stay home from work or school and avoid close contact with family members and others.

More information about H1N1 is available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at: http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/?s_cid=swineFlu_outbreak_internal_001 and the World Health Organization: http://www.who.int/en/

Contingency plans are being made in the unlikely event that the remainder of semester is interrupted by a health emergency. As the situation evolves, we will update the college community. You may also refer to www.esf.edu/flu.

Reminders from Dr. Shannon

Below is an e-mail from Dr. Shannon, Dean of Instruction and Graduate Studies. This e-mail is very informative for those trying to graduate this May. Please read on...

Hello all-
The Office of Instruction & Graduate Studies has been receiving what seems to be an unusually large number of requests for “late” appointments of defense chairs, etc., related to graduate students trying to graduate in May 2009. I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but please be aware that the posted deadline for appointment of a defense chair for a scheduled May 2009 graduate date was December 3, 2008 (http://www.esf.edu/graduate/deadlines.htm). The deadline for successfully completing defenses for a May graduation is April 24, 2009, and the deadline for meeting all degree requirements, including submission of all degree documents, including diploma request forms, is April 29, 2009. Also, all MF, MPS, and MLA students intending to graduate in May must notify our office of their intent to participate in May Convocation ceremonies by April 22, 2009.

While we have been working hard to try to accommodate students who have requested chair appointments after the December 3 deadline, we cannot guarantee that scheduling and completing the defense (and other degree and document submission requirements) can be completed in time to allow students to participate in graduation or receive a graduation date. This is particularly true of any student who has requested a chair any later than 15 February; some particularly organized students and committees may make it, but most will not graduate this May. If you are only now trying to have a defense chair appointed, or scheduling your defense, you will almost certainly need to pursue an August or December graduation date

Finally, please be aware that college policy is NOT to schedule defenses during the summer (any date between May 25 and August 28), while the majority of faculty are off-contract and/or off campus pursuing research and field work. While a defense may be scheduled during summer by petition, summer defenses are only to be pursued as a matter of last resort or under truly exceptional circumstances, not as a convenience to students.
Thank you-

Advising and Registration Reminders

Some notes from the Registrar...

Advising
SUNY-ESF requires that every student, both undergraduate and graduate, meet with his or her advisor/major professor before registering for classes. All ESF students will have an advising hold placed on their registration records. This hold will be released by the ESF Registrar’s Office once you obtain your advisor’s/major professor’s signature on a registration form and then bring your completed and signed form to our office at 111 Bray Hall. Please also note that any time you register or add/drop the original form must be returned to the Registrar’s Office with the appropriate signature. Please note: your advisor cannot release an advising hold. You must come to the ESF Registrar’s Office before you can register.

NOTE: Advising holds will be removed within 24 hours of receipt of the signed registration form.

Other Registration Holds
In addition to your advising hold, a hold may be placed on your registration if you need SU Health Services clearance, have an unpaid account balance at the ESF or SU Bursar’s Office, have overdue books at Moon Library or the SU Libraries, or are on ESF Administrative hold, and so forth. To view your registration holds go to the MySlice Portal (link attached below) and then choose the View Holds hyperlink from the Student Services Application.

Please go to the office listed to have the hold condition resolved. You will not be able to register until all holds are removed.

Goodnews! More SU Classes for the coming semester

Here's a letter from Dr. Bongarten informing current students that ESF has allotted more money to pay for classes taken at SU, please read on...

Dear Students,

With Advising Week and Pre-Registration upon us, I am writing to update you on the availability of Syracuse University courses for fall semester.

As you are probably aware by now, ESF pays for SU courses taken by ESF students. In response to a series of cuts in state support that began last summer, we placed restrictions on the number and kind of SU courses that ESF students could take in the current academic year. This was one of several measures enacted to balance our reduced budget. For many of you this caused hardship or disappointment which I greatly regret.

Our budget for the upcoming academic year will remain tight. The state budget for 2009-2010 just announced includes no financial relief for SUNY or ESF.

Nevertheless, for the upcoming academic year we have budgeted for more SU hours than were used this year. Further, College-wide restrictions on SU courses have been rescinded. This will allow you and your academic advisors and departments more flexibility to meet your academic goals.

On the other hand, please recognize that there are limits to the increased flexibility. Departments have been allocated a fixed number of SU credit hours that may be used by their students. Your advisors will work with you to see that you are able to take the SU courses needed to meet your academic goals. “Luxury consumption” of SU courses will only be approved if it becomes apparent that departmental allocations can support it.

Based on past history, we have budgeted enough SU hours for all of your needs and many but not all of your wants. Because of the latter, I must again call for your understanding and restraint in seeking entry to SU courses that are not critical to your educational goals.

At ESF we are committed to providing you with a high quality education, and will continue to work diligently within our constraints to deliver on that promise.

RE: Advising for Fall 2009 March 30 – April 2

Advising for the Fall 2009 registration starts on Monday, March 30. It is the expectation of the ESF Faculty and Administration that all students take the responsibility to schedule an appointment with their academic advisor/major professor during this time. Faculty have been directed to set aside time during this week to meet your advising needs.

Direct Deposit Advise

Attention: College Work Study Employees, Student Assistants and Graduate Assistants who have their State pay direct deposited to their bank accounts

On the back of the “Direct Deposit Form for NYS Employees” it states,

“Note: Direct deposit advice statements are distributed by the enrollee’s agency. If the statement is unclaimed, it will be held by the agency for thirty (30) days after which time the statement will be destroyed”.

As of April 1, 2009 we will implement this practice. For any payroll distribution after this date we will hold the direct deposit advice for 30 days. If it has not been picked up from 102 Bray Hall (Cashiers office) we will destroy the advice by shredding, after the thirty day holding period.

This notice does not pertain to the Faculty /Staff State Payroll as their direct deposit advice is sent to the employees’ office of employment. This, also, does not pertain to the Research Foundation payrolls.

SUMMER SCHOOL INFO

A. SUMMER 2009 PROGRAMS AT WANAKENA AND CRANBERRY LAKE BIOLOGICAL STATION ‑ If you have questions about the Wanakena program, contact Chris Westbrook via e-mail at westbrook@esf.edu. If you have questions about the session at Cranberry Lake, see Dr. Alex Weir, 353 Illick Hall.

However, if you desire to take courses at SU or UC, you should fill out an "Approval for Summer Work at SU" form available in 111 Bray. You will then register directly with SU or UC and must pay the tuition specified for your Summer Session(s).

D. If you are an undergraduate and wish to take an Independent Research Problem (XXX 498) during the summer, you should fill out a "Request for Summer 498" form available in 111 Bray. This form requires the signature and approval of the instructor, your advisor, and your program director, and will enable us to track summer registration and grading.

Scholarship Opportunity

Call for Applications
Robert Burgess Graduate Scholarship in Ecology The Department of Environmental and Forest Biology is pleased to invite applicaions for the Robert L. Burgess Graduate Scholarship in Ecology. This award recognizes a graduate student who shows excellent potential as an ecologist and as a leader in science. Applicants must be doctoral students in EFB who have successfully completed Qualifying Exams but have not defended their disseation. In addition, qualified applicants must have at least one paper published or in press in a refereed journal. Candidates should demonstrate
leadership potential and a broad interest in ecology. Dr. Robert L. Burgess was trained in plant ecology at the University of Wisconsin and spent much of his career leading ecological research pgrams at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He came to SUNY‐ESF to serve as the Chair of EFB and contributed to the consolidation of EFB as a single department during his 18‐year tenure at ESF. He became widely known for his classic work on forest island dynamics in human dominated
landscapes and for his contributions to the history of American ecology. The Burgess Graduate Scholarship constitutes an important recognition that EFB awards annually to one of our distinguished P candidates. Awardees receive a plaque recognizing their scientific and leadership potential and a modest financial reward. The current situation in the stock market has caused the Burgess Endowment funds to be extremely low, but we at the department feel that the recognition of one of our deserving students in Dr. Burgess' memory is too important to skip this year. Thus, this year’s award
will be sponsored directly by EFB and will carry $250. To apply, send a letter of application, CV, and a letter of recommendation from your major professor to Dr. Martin Dovčiak by April 9. The award will be announced at the EFB pre‐onvocation awards ceremony on May 9.

Martin Dovčiak, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Plant Ecology 246 Illick Hall, Environmental & Forest Biology, SUNY‐ESF

Summer 2009 Camp Counselor Employment Opportunities
Summer Camps Investigating Ecology in Neighborhood and City Environments (ESF SCIENCE) exposes Syracuse middle and high school students to science and environmental education. Through summer environmental camps, participants are involved in programs that emphasize urban ecology and urban ecosystems that are relevant to their lives, a critical key for cultivating and sustaining interest in science during the middle school years and beyond. The environmental summer camps, situated in local green, make campers more aware of urban environmental issues and motivate them to become environmental problem solvers. Students are involved in service learning projects that promote environmental stewardship and environmental awareness, as students take pride in maintaining and improving the environment for their communities.

We highly encourage you to NOT respond to this request, as you could lose the fee and jeopardize your personally identifiable information.
